Accreditation of Freire Practitioners
Updated, 2 Apr 2010: We now have plans in place for accreditation of Freire practitioners. Accreditation would help those who are interested in taking Freirean pedagogical practice further to identify specific skills.
What we have tried to avoid is going down the traditional academic route. Instead, we recognize that many people are already engaged in relevant practice – in their professional work or as activists and volunteers – that forms an essential part of their knowledge. Including this experience in any accreditation programme is vital.
Community-based accreditation is something that follows from community-based learning. We want to see that people engage with tools of social analysis and groupwork, that they can reflect clearly upon their practice, that they understand the key concepts of Freirean pedagogy and that they can apply these in concrete situations. The plans for this are now in place and future programmes will include guidance on accreditation, where applicable.
